Children’s Classes

Thank you for your interest in our Dancescene classes for your child

Thank you for your interest in our Dancescene classes for your child.  Through our Dancescene classes, we endeavour to open your child’s eyes to the ‘joy of dance’, the fun and drama of performance, while nurturing the development of musical appreciation.

Dancing is a wonderful medium for self-expression.  Encouraging musicality, poise and self-confidence, dance is great fun as well as being an artistic physical discipline. The Dancescene philosophy is to actively engage children in all genres of dance without making classes overly formal or boring.

The Dancescene early childhood dance programme ‘Kindy Ballet’ is created for children aged 3-5 years and introduces children to dance and movement in a highly interactive and playful way. Classes are fun, steps and exercises are age appropriate and varied, while the learning environment is positive and encouraging.

Using the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) syllabus as an excellent technical framework for Primary Ballet and Grades, we have incorporated greater accent on the creative linkages of movement and music to ensure that your child is exposed to a more comprehensive and freer approach to music and dance. Our Open Ballet classes for all ages, include exercises and steps from different ballet syllabi and repertoire from some of the great ballets, which creates a beautiful ‘big ballet’ experience for all dancers.

Performance is a rewarding and much anticipated part of the Dancescene programme and our annual recital introduces children to the fun of the theatre while presenting the opportunity for students to perform on stage for supportive families and friends.  Our Dancescene recitals are regularly staged at the Curtin Theatre, John Curtin College of the Arts, Ellen Street, Fremantle.

The Dancescene studio located in Mary Lockett Hall, next to Christ Church on the corner of Queenslea Drive and Stirling Hwy, Claremont provides expert dance tuition in classical ballet, jazz, hip-hop and Contemporary Dance for children aged from 3yrs to 20 yrs, along with Adult classes and Ballet 4 Seniors classes for students over 60 yrs.  The unique Dancescene environment is created to inspire, motivate and nurture the joy of dance in all its genres.

Covid 19

Our Dancescene staff are all vaccinated with boosters and our studio is kept immaculately clean and hygienic at all times.  It is a condition of entry to the studio that all people entering use the hand sanitiser at the door.  We also ask that Parents do not bring children to class if unwell, we provide a range of make up classes that a child can attend when feeling better.

In the event of community restrictions or a spontaneous lockdown in Perth, our studio is well equipped to automatically default to zoom and film so that a student’s dance progress is maintained and unimpeded. We also have a fabulous online dance platform https://www.idancedaily.com.au that offers unlimited classes in classical ballet, jazz, hip-hop, salsa, yoga, Pilates, and stretch and conditioning.

Clothing

Our littlest ballerinas’ enrolled in Teeny Ballet, Preps or Primary Ballet classes can wear leotards, tutus or fairy dresses in a colour of their choice along with tights or leggings if it’s cold, essentially anything that inspires them to dance.  Ballet students in the Grades upwards can wear any colour leotard and chiffon skirt of their choice.  Preps jazz and hip-hop dance students need to wear shorts, jazz pants, track pants or leggings with a top.  All students must have longer hair pulled back into a bun, pony tail or braid.  Our boys of all ages can wear shorts or leggings/trackies with a fitted tee shirt. As for footwear, ballet slippers or jazz shoes are best.  Sneakers or trainers are fine for hip hop. Dancescene sells high quality ballet and jazz shoes, leotards, tights and luxe tracksuits.

All Dancescene teachers hold First Aid certificates and have Working with Children cards. In addition to substantial dance experience, our teaching collective enjoys diverse professional training including business, health, law, languages, the arts, interior design and early childhood education.  Our teachers include Lisa Purchas, Mikaila Godfrey, Tashi Bullman, and Amelia Sagrabb.

We are members of the prestigious International Dance Council, CID, UNESCO which distinguishes us as one of the leading professionals in dance on an International level.  As members of the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) organisation we are kept informed of technical developments and modifications to the RAD dance syllabus.  Being wholly recreational studios, Dancescene is free to pursue greater variation in movement, music and creativity without the pressure of taking children through the technically exacting examination process, which incidentally does not suit all children in pursuit of dancing for pleasure.  Should your child ultimately choose to sit exams, there are a number of studios in Perth who can facilitate this, and I am happy to make recommendations.

Dancescene is a keen supporter of the WA Ballet and it’s Junior Members Programme.  Dancescene is regularly awarded a place by ‘Active Activities’ in the top 25 activities for children in Perth.

We also host the most beautiful ballerina birthday parties, disco, jazz and hip-hop birthday parties.

We look forward to meeting you and your child soon.

With best regards,

Lisa Purchas
Principal of Dancescene
Member of the RAD and the International Dance Council, CID, UNESCO.
